Satellite communication means more than just increased convenience in the daily work routines on board a vessel. More importantly, it also sets the standards in regards to efficiency and safety for ships of all sizes. Through thorough research and innovative thinking KVH offers high-quality satellite products for all purposes and vessels.

Inmarsat

From Inmarsat original, and continuing, core mission to protect lives at sea, Inmarsat have always provided service to the most remote locations on the planet. Inmarsat fly satellites in geostationary orbit, 35,786km (22,236 miles) above the Earth,  because this meets the needs of global mobility customers and it only takes three satellites to cover the globe.

Inmarsat strategy has always been to deliver global coverage first, then increase capacity as demand builds and ensure the networks to be the most reliable, so Inmarsat build redundancy into it’s infrastructure in space and on the ground.

Today Inmarsat own and operate 14 geostationary satellites powering seamless safety and mission-critical mobile broadband communications around the world. To meet ever more complex bandwidth demands, will launch a further six satellites by 2025 and significantly expand ground network to support them.

Inmarsat C

Safeguard against the unpredictability of the open water and extreme weather conditions with the mainstay of maritime safety,Inmarsat C.

Saving lives at sea since 1999. Guaranteed for reliability and built to last, Inmarsat C and Mini C is a two-way store and forward communication system transmitting messages from ship-to-shore, shore-to-ship and ship-to-ship.

Send and receive data from across the oceans including email, SMS, telex, chart and weather updates. The first-ever service approved to meet the requirements of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Global Maritime Distress
and Safety System (GMDSS) for Ship Security Alert Systems (SSAS), Inmarsat C is your lifeline to transmit and receive near real-time distress and safety communication.

When your safety is compromised and there’s no time to send a distress message, instantly call for help with one dedicated distress button. Simply press for five seconds to transmit the distress alert to the nearest Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC).

There’s no need to worry about sending your exact position, course, speed or nature of your distress as this is automatically broadcast with your distress alert.Comply with the IMO requirement for Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) and the system is fully SOLAS compliant to ensure your vessel meets the standards set by the IMO.When faced with dangerous conditions that compromise your safety, Inmarsat C will never let you down with a guaranteed connection to those that can help.

Iridium

The Iridium system is a satellite-based Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) system, supporting global, wireless digital communications. Iridium provides voice, messaging and data services to mobile subscribers.

The Iridium Satellite System is the only provider of truly global satellite voice and data solutions with complete coverage of the Earth (including oceans, airways and Polar Regions).

Iridium uses a constellation of 66 low-earth orbiting (LEO) satellites operated by Boeing, to deliver essential communications services to and from remote areas where terrestrial communications are not available.

The Iridium system comprises three principal components: the satellite network, the ground network and the Iridium subscriber products including phones and pagers. The design of the Iridium network allows voice and data to be routed virtually anywhere in the world. Voice and data calls are relayed from one satellite to another until they reach the satellite above the Iridium Subscriber Unit (handset) and the signal is relayed back to Earth.

Iridium Satellite launched commercial global satellite communications services on March 28, 2001 with enhanced products and services.  Service enhancements include improved voice quality and simplified pricing plans. Soon after launch, Iridium expanded the service portfolio to include data services.

FleetBroadband

Broadband connectivity anywhere at sea

FleetBroadband provides cost-effective voice and data through a compact antenna, delivered globally via the I-4 satellite and ground network, which maintains over 99.9 per cent network availability.

The reliability of the L-band service means it can provide unlimited back-up to our high-speed Fleet Xpress service, ensuring seamless global mobility.

Thousands of vessels of all sizes and in all maritime sectors trust in FleetBroadband for operational communications such as email, phone and applications that help them do everything from plotting the most fuel-efficient route to diagnosing mechanical faults remotely by video link.

It boosts morale onboard by enabling crew to stay in touch with family and friends, use social media, and watch news and entertainment.

Crucially, FleetBroadband delivers safety services to non-SOLAS vessels so that in an emergency vessels can immediately get through to a Maritime Rescue and Coordination Centre (MRCC) by pressing the distress button or simply dialling 505.

Choose the best fit for your vessel

There are a number of terminals, smartboxes, applications and value added services to choose from:

FB150 delivers global voice, IP data up to 150kbps and SMS texting to smaller vessels with less need for high bandwidth applications. The above-deck and below-deck units are highly compact and easy to install, with antennas from 22.1cm x 29.1cm, weighing 2.5kg.

For larger vessels, such as coastal merchant and fishing fleets, FB250 offers faster data speeds of up to 250kbps and live streaming for applications like video conferencing, plus up to nine telephone lines with FleetBroadband Multi-voice for crystal clear voice calls.

FB500 is our fastest FleetBroadband service, delivering always-on connections speeds of up to 432kbps and streaming rates up to 256kbps for multiple user operational and crew communications, anywhere at sea, in any conditions.
